I am interested in developing web applications. I know the visual web developer can be downloaded from Microsoft. I know a little visual basic. Is this a good language and software to get started with. Is there something better. How long would you think it would take a beginner developer to learn the language and build fairly sophisticated applications.

Answer by Colanth VWD isn’t a language, it’s a program. Microsoft web development is done mostly in ASP or ASPX – not a good choice, since you can only use what you develop on a Microsoft server (and they’re in the minority). Use Javascript for client-side code and PHP for server-side code.
How long? That depends on how good a programmer you are. (Programming and a programming language are totally different things. If you don’t know programming, figure on 6 months to become a beginner. Use http://www-old.oberon.ethz.ch/WirthPubl/AD.pdf to learn.)
If you’re a good programmer, Javascript could take a couple of months to get good at. PHP is easier.

Ok, I know web 2.0 is basically websites for user-generated and interactive content, from late ’04-early ’06, or present.
But I don’t know..apperently its going to be a so-called “semantic web”, but web 3.0??, I don’t know how legitimate that terminology is, but are they really going to start naming EVERY period of web development in stages?.

Though people disagree on what Web2.0 really is. Initially it was just the name of a conference created by O’Reilly Publishers. The term then snowballed to embrace UGC, Social Networking, Ajax, Folksonomies (user tagging) and other stuff that is now commonplace. At the beginning I think it was simply a way for clued up web people to encapsulate all that was new and exciting about the web. Now of course it’s been hijacked by marketing types to flog any old service.
The idea of a semantic web predates Web2.0 as a concept and has been promoted by Tim_Berners-Lee (the creator of the WWW) for a while now. Calling it Web3.0 is stupid but, alas, probably inevitable.
I think naming web stages in advance is a mugs game. Only from looking at the history will we really see any “stages” and pinpoint the moments that truely changed the game. Maybe it will be more closely related to the economics of the market rather than the technologies; if there’s another burst bubble, that’s what will be more significant, not that someone worked out how to do chat over AJAX.
